What Is In Your Hands? - By Pat Stanton

Do you have a spear or music in your hands?

Do you have a spear or music in your hands?  "...so David played music with his hand, as at other times, but there was a spear in Saul's hand" (1 Samuel 13:10).

In this story, we find that God used David as a peacemaker as he served King Saul.  This king had become jealous of David's popularity with the people and he began to view David with suspicion.  Because of King Saul's disobedience, the Spirit of the Lord departed from him and a distressing spirit troubled him.

Whenever King Saul was troubled and distressed, David took a harp and played it with his hand.  Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him.  We find that Saul attempted to pin David to the wall on more than one occasion.

What can we learn from this story?  It is easy to see that your hands are valuable tools for good or bad.  David used his hands to play music and to bring peace and wholeness.  King Saul used his hands to bring harm and destruction.  Do you ever have a spear in your hands?  Well, hopefully not a real spear, but what about trying to pin someone to the wall with words and outbursts of anger?

Hopefully, we can all live like David, "And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him" (1 Samuel 18:14).  What is in your hands?
